MOTAT Trip - Lily
These are two olden day bikes. Some had 2 wheels or even 3 wheels like a tricycle. There are lots of similarities and differences between this bike and a modern day bike.
Pedaling: The pedaling system on these two bikes are both very similar. You pedal with your feet on the pedals and it pulls the bike chain behind you which then turn the wheels on the bike.
Braking: There were two different types of braking methods used. The first were normal bike brakes but in second (top left) you used a piece of wire to push the stick of metal back onto the spinning tyre and the friction between the wheel and the piece of metal will help slow the bike down.
Steering: You steer the bike with the steering bars that you hold onto at the front. The steering bars are connected to a big long bike beam/pole that is then connected to the front wheel. If you use your hands to turn the steering bars it will turn the wheel aswell - like a normal bike.
Wheels: The wheels are quite big so you can go faster a lot more easily. The rubber tyres with create friction with the ground so it can be easily stopped but not too much to slow it down. The wheels are attached to the metal frame of the bike by two axles. The wheels are simple machines.
