Bicycles

What is a bike?
Bikes are a bunch of simple machines that work together. Wheels, pedals, gears, and brakes are all simple machines.
Bicycles have many forces acting on them such as motion, gravity, inertia, and friction.

How defines gravity.
Do you remember when you first got on a bike? You probably fell off a lot. The reason you fell is because you didn't make the wheels go fast enough to keep the bike going in a forward motion, so gravity pulled you down. When you push the pedals down and make the wheels spin fast, you create a circular motion that drives the bike forward. This acts like a anti gravity force, so when you are riding a bike your defying gravity.

How a bicycle maximizes friction.
When the texture of a surface is smoother the bike will go faster, if the surface is rougher it will go slowly because their's more friction between the wheel and the surface so it will be hard to push or pull.

Steering and breaking mechanisms.
Every bicycle has a handle bar, when you angle the handle bar it turns the bike that way. The handle bars are connected to a cog that is connected to the wheel, the wheels are connected to the pedals that you power so you are steering the bike from the pedals.
Every bike has a break that is connected the wheel, when you push the break down it stops the bike from moving forward.

How the wheels are attached to the bicycle.
There are two wheels attached to a bike, they are attached by cogs that are connected to the pedals.

Inertia.
According to Newton's first law, inertia is when a object that is moving has a tendency to keep moving and the tendency for an object that is at rest to stay at rest.
Try this, go outside and pedal your bike really fast and then brake. Did you stop immediately? Or did you skid a little bit? Because of inertia, you should have skid a few inches.

Friction.
Friction is a force that pulls or pushes against an object.
You can feel friction when you rub your hands together. Do they feel warm? This is friction acting. Now put soap on your hands and rub them together. Do your hands move easier with soap? That's just like putting oil on gears so the wheels move easier!
