JEAN BATTEN by Matilda

Jean Batten was born on the 15th of November 1909 and died 22nd November 1982. In 1904 she was enrolled into a girls' boarding school in Remuera, where she studied ballet and piano. Though she was a gifted pianist, at the age of 18 she wanted to become a pilot. In 1929 her and her mother moved to England so she could join a English Aeroplane club. The first time Jean flew solo was in 1930. Jean Batten was a general role model because woman were very restricted in what they did and she made a path of independence by flying solo from England to Australia.
