Born on the 19th of June 1945 in Rangoon (the former capital of Burma), she was destined to be a pro-democracy activist. She studied at Oxford University where she met her future husband and returned to Burma to tend to her dying mother, where she soon became involved in the country's uprising against the Military Regime. She the became the General Secretary for the newly formed National League for Democracy. When the dictatorship finally agreed to an election Aung San Suu Kyi and others were detained and unable to run, NLD won 82% of the seats but the results were never recognised.
Aung San Suu Kyi had been in house arrest on and off until 2012 when the military government released her. According to the results of the 1990 election she earned the right to be Prime Minister but was denied it by the Military Government because she was under house arrest.
Recently she was awarded a honorary doctorate from Oxford University. She was also awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1991 and continues to lead change in Burma by travelling and speaking up for democracy not only in Burma but around the world.
